A Burning Question Answered: What Is a Polo Shirt?

what occasions can I wear them to, and where do I get one ASAP?

noun /ˈpoʊ.loʊ ˌʃɝːt/
An informal style of a cotton shirt, with short sleeves, a collar, and some buttons at the neck.

An essential and a big name in men’s fashion and clothing: the polo shirt. And now, you are probably thinking about the worst versions available. The extremely square fitting, non-flattering, striped versions that are often worn by dads (sometimes even with the collar popped up). Or maybe the type that comes to mind is the too-tight fitting one, made out of shiny, synthetic fabrics that just show off too much bod - often worn by men that identify as gym enthusiasts.

But, let us tell you: polos can be as cool as hell. And not to mention, a very versatile option for us men. If you get your hands on the right type, expect to be all set for different occasions. Think business casual attire, think date nights. Think family gatherings, comfortable Sunday outfits... Yes. When we say versatile, we mean versatile.

Down below, we do not only tell you the answer to the burning question (what is a polo shirt?), but we have hooked you up with a mini-guide that will clarify what, when, how to wear and what to mind when buying one as well. The pleasure is all ours.

The history of the polo shirt

As much as we like some fashion history - this time, we will keep it short. In the run-up to the moment where brands as Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, and Fred Perry became big names in the fashion and polo industry many years ago, the polo shirt was nothing but functional wear for men.

When in 1862 British soldiers brought the sport of polo back to their country after being stationed in India, they didn’t leave the polo uniform behind either, which in that time consisted of a long-sleeved, white button-up shirt. Not very comfortable, nor an item connected to the words style or fashion.

As the uniform of tennis players was quite similar to the shirt of polo players, there Jean Rene Lacoste came along, introducing a more wearable version to wear while playing: instead of the annoying long sleeve, he gave them a short sleeve, a longer back panel (to tuck ‘em in), and said goodbye to the stiff, starched collars.

And while role models such as James Dean, and later on Daniel Craig were picking up the polo shirt, the popularity of it rose even more among the years: from then, the polo grew up to be what it is now: an appealing piece of clothing, that fits many dress codes.

How and when to wear them

Ok, that’s cool and all - but how do you buy, style, and wear them exactly, without looking like an off-duty polo or tennis player ? And what color to buy? Style? Sleeve length? Anyone?

Well, this is how. We’ve found ourselves a cool person, who was happy to answer all of your questions about this classic item.

Is a polo business casual approved?

Yes. But, there is a but. It completely depends on the company you work for - and you, of all people, are the best person to determine if wearing one is appropriate. As far as we’re concerned a (knit) polo indeed is business casual attire, but only in case if you to stick to a long-sleeved version, preferably slim-fit or fitted, in materials as mercerized cotton or (our favorite) woven merino wool knit. No logo. Simple and plain. Pair up with a blazer and you’re good to go.

Appropriate colors are in this case black, navy, dark green, and the different shades of grey. Oh, and please don’t wear them completely unbuttoned with chest hair peeking out. One button open is more than enough.

Does a polo count as a collared shirt?

As they have the same appearance, we could say yes. But, (again, a but) it depends on the type of polo. If wearing a shirt is desired for the occassion, then just don’t pick a polo. But if there is a grey area, and you just really want to wear a polo shirt - make sure to go with a version that has no logo, emblems, or any striking print on them. Nice and clean, simplistic, and professional. Please avoid white.

Is a polo shirt good for an interview?

Yes, a polo shirt can be a great option for an interview. Once again, this depends on a few other factors, such as the company and the type of role you apply for. Make sure, when dressing for an interview to do your research. Find out what current employers wear, browse online about the different types of dress codes, and don’t think to light about your outfit!

One tip: always ‘add’ up one level to the dressing game. Meaning, that if you’re applying for a company in which most people wear polos and jeans, wear a (white) button-up shirt with navy jeans, for example.

Is it OK to wear a polo with a blazer?

Not always - but in best case, yes it is, especially to wear to work. Make sure that your polo shirt is ironed, free of stains, has a good fit that complements your physique, and is made out of a professional-looking fabric, such as a knit material or pique cotton.

What is the difference between a golf shirt and a polo shirt?

As to shape and appearance, not much. The difference between a polo shirt and a golf shirt is, that a golf shirt is made to be worn while being active (like doing golf, for example) - this is reflected in the fabric that is used. The golf shirt often consists out of polyester, or other materials that have moisture-wicking features, which will give you extra comfort. Polo shirts, in this case, are often made out of pique cotton: breathable and comfortable for daily wear.

Is a polo shirt a dress shirt?

Ehm, no. Not really. Dress shirts are more likely to be suitable for formal occasions. The collar of a dress shirt is stiff, the collar of a polo isn’t, for example.

What pants go with polo shirts?

Believe it or not - almost every type of pant does. A good pair of jeans works great. For a smart-casual setting, choose unwashed, dry denim. Business casual attire? Pick a tailored pant and a long-sleeved, black or navy polo. Shorts in summer go great with a cotton or jersey polo in bright, summery colors.
